BOSASO, Somalia — Puntland police have arrested four people suspected of trafficking and distributing alcohol and narcotics during a planned security operation in the port city of Bosaso, authorities said.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Bari regional police command, according to a statement issued by Puntland police.
Authorities said officers seized various types of alcohol that they suspected had been prepared for sale and distribution.
Police said investigations were underway to determine the origin of the seized substances, how they were being distributed and whether other people were involved in the suspected trafficking network.
The authorities did not disclose the identities of the four suspects or provide details about the quantity of alcohol or other substances seized during the operation.
Puntland police said combating narcotics and other activities considered a threat to public health and safety remained a security priority.
The force warned people involved in importing, storing, selling or distributing narcotics and alcohol that they would face legal action.
Police also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report information about suspected drug-trafficking activities and locations.
The arrests come as authorities in Puntland have stepped up efforts to tackle illicit trade and other criminal activities in Bosaso, a major commercial and maritime hub in northeastern Somalia.
The case remains under investigation, and the suspects are expected to be handed over to the relevant authorities in accordance with Puntland laws and legal procedures.
