MATABAN, Somalia — Somali National Army (SNA) forces, in coordination with local Macawiisley militias, have launched military movements in Matabaan district, Hiiraan region, ahead of planned operations targeting Al-Shabaab militants.

The joint forces aim to resume offensives in eastern parts of Hiiraan still under the control of the insurgent group, as part of broader efforts to reclaim territory.

Two days ago, the SNA Ground Forces Commander addressed hundreds of troops in Matabaan, preparing them for the upcoming campaign against Al-Shabaab positions.

Military activity has been particularly noticeable in the towns of Maxaas and Moqokori, which fell under Al-Shabaab control late last year. Reports indicate that the group has reinforced its positions in Maxaas, a strategic town connecting Hiiraan and Galguduud regions.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest Al-Shabaab fighters may have withdrawn from certain areas, including Waabweyn.

The security situation in Hiiraan remains tense, with joint operations expected to continue in the coming days.
