MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to travel to New York to preside over a United Nations Security Council session, sources say.

If confirmed, Hassan Sheikh would become the first Somali head of state to chair a Security Council meeting, marking a historic diplomatic achievement and highlighting Somalia’s growing role on the international stage.

During the session, the President is expected to deliver an official address, focusing on the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as addressing external challenges affecting national cohesion.

The trip comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its diplomatic presence and enhance its influence within the UN, particularly in areas of peace, security, and international cooperation.
