MOGADISHU, Somalia – The government of Somalia has taken a decisive step by banning the betting platform 1XBet to curb the growing addiction among youngsters.

Nur Sheikh Osman, a legal commentator has welcomed the ban on 1XBet which is popular in Somalia for betting, especially on football matches, whereas the prediction is earned if it is correct.

Osman, speaking to Radio Shabelle described the decision as a commendable move that if enforced will curb the problems that 1XBet caused, in terms of the economy and religion.

The government of Somalia is under pressure to combat anything that goes against Islamic Sharia and the culture of the Somali people after the rise in immoral acts and misdeeds.

Gambling or betting is Haram [Forbidden] in the Islamic religion because Allah has forbidden it. Gambling destroys families, causes the loss of wealth, and creates insecurity.

On Tuesday, the National Commission in charge of the Prevention of Money Laundering and Combating Terrorism Financing issued a decision banning the 1XBET from the country.

This comes weeks after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said a military offensive against Al-Shabaab aims to eliminate the group, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, within a year.
