MOGADISHU [SMN] – Five al-Shabab militants were killed by Somali National Army forces during security operations in the southern region of the country.

Sources said other al-Shabab hideouts were also destroyed in the operations that took place in the previous 24 hours at Gambarey, Dawacale, and Geediyan villages in the Lower Shabelle region, according to Somali National Army (SNA) commanders.

“The army also drove away some of the terrorists who were causing severe issues for the locals,” the state-run radio reported, as SNA leaders vowed to keep the attack going until the militants in the area were flushed out.

The villagers, according to state-run radio, welcomed the ongoing security operations, saying they were pleased with the present military achievements, which they hope will lead to calm in the area.

In 2011, the Somali National Army, with the support of the African Union Mission in Somalia, drove al-Shabab out of Mogadishu. However, the terrorist group is still capable of carrying out attacks on government facilities, hotels, restaurants, and public spaces.
