Somali police avert car bomb attack in the capital; 6 injured

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The security officials in Mogadishu said that they averted an attack used by a car filled with explosives and driven by an Al-Shabaab suicide bomber.

 

The car has exploded at a checkpoint in the city’s northern Dayniile district, where the paramilitary police are manning a checkpoint to protect the capital from outside attacks.

An official in the Dayniile district which is in charge of the security affairs Ali Abdi Farah told the media that five soldiers and a civilian were injured in the foiled attack on Wednesday.

It is also said that the police cordoned off the scene following the explosion and halted public transport for a short time to ensure security, according to the eyewitnesses.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack but did not disclose how many people have sustained wounds or may be killed. The blast comes amid tightened security measures.

On Tuesday, NISA announced the names of seven members of the al-Shabaab leaders who were killed in operations that took place in the area of ​​Awdheegle on the 10th of this month and in ​​Bulacle near Dhusamareb on the 11th of September 2023.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency said in a statement that the members who were killed were al-Shabaab in charge of killings, explosions, and attacks in Somalia.
