MOGADISHU – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday laid a wreath at the Dhagax-Tuur monument in Mogadishu to honor the country’s freedom fighters, particularly those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the northern regions and the broader Somali liberation movement.

The president described the monument as a powerful symbol of the nation’s historic struggle for independence and a reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations. He urged Somalis to uphold unity, patriotism, and solidarity to fulfill the aspirations of their forefathers for a free, peaceful, and progressive Somalia.

“The Dhagax-Tuur monument stands as a testament to the courage and resilience of those who fought for our nation’s freedom. Preserving national unity and love for country remains our duty,” Mohamud said.

The ceremony was attended by several government ministers, members of parliament, the mayor of Mogadishu, and representatives from across Mogadishu’s civil society.

The event coincided with the 65th anniversary of the northern regions’ independence from British colonial rule — a key milestone in Somalia’s path toward nationhood.
