BRUSSELS, Belgium – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with top EU officials in Brussels as he participated in the Global Gateway Forum kicked off on October 25.
“Very happy to receive President Hassan Sheikh one year after my visit to Somalia. Somalia is on the right track and further progress needs to be consolidated. A post-2024 security plan should be presented soon to guarantee even stronger support from partners,” said Josep Borrell Fontelles.
The president also held a meeting with Charles Michel, the President of the European Council in Brussels. They discussed the Somali government’s efforts to eradicate the threat of terrorism and the EU’s continued support in areas of security, state-building, and development.
“I had a fruitful meeting with the EU Council President. Our government is steadfast in its commitment to eradicating the threat of terrorism, advancing democratization & state-building, & propelling growth. We are pleased with our cooperation with the EU at all levels,” said Mohamud.
Michel said the EU aims to remain a loyal partner in capacity building and humanitarian support. He added: “Your efforts in the fight against terrorism are key to security and stability in Somalia, President.”
