Somali president visits Southwest State as army offensive looms

BAIDOA, Somalia – The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Baidoa, the interim capital of Southwest State on Wednesday.

 

The president was warmly welcomed at the Baidoa airport by the regional leader Abdiaziz Laftagareen, and other officials while the security has been extremely beefed up.

The purpose of the President’s trip to Baidoa is said to be related to the start of the second phase of the war against Al-Shabaab after the first phase came to the finishing point.

Hassan Sheikh during his stay in Southwest State will visit areas in the Bakool region near the Ethiopian border to meet the Somali National Army [SNA] soldiers and state forces.

In addition, the president will discuss Laftagareen’s ways to find a solution to the political crisis in the regional state, including the elections, which are set to take place this year.

The president was a grantor of an agreement between Laftagareen and his opposition.
