MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of Eritrea, Isaias Afwerki, on Sunday received the credentials of the first-ever ambassador from Somalia to Asmara as relations improve.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Dr. Omar Idris, who previously served as Qatar’s ambassador to Somalia from 2011 to 2017 as the new envoy to Eritrea.
Somalia’s new ambassador to Eritrea has posted a message on his X, formerly Twitter handle saying that he is happy to be the first Somali ambassador to Eritrea.
“It was an honor for me to be the first ambassador from Somalia to Eritrea in the history of the two countries,” Ambassador Omar Idris said in a brief statement posted on X.
He also said that Ambassador Omar is committed to working on the fraternal relationship between the two countries of Somalia and Eritrea, which has a long history.
Eritrea, the most isolated nation in Africa trains thousands of Somali soldiers with president Hassan Sheikh paid four visits since assuming office last year to meet the SNA recruits.
Today, Eritrea and Somalia share an array of vital interests, as well as a history of solidarity and fraternal ties.
