Somalia makes Milestone as it secures EAC Membership

ARUSHA, Tanzania  – The Federal Republic of Somalia is celebrating for a historic Milestone after joining the East African Community (EAC) on Friday.

 

The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh who made the first (2012) and last bid in 2022 for EAC seat has participated the 23rd summit of the regional bloc, sitting on the hard-earned seat.

In his keynote speech, president Hassan Sheikh said his country has opened a new page for its history as it makes strides towards regaining its glory in global and regional arena.

Somalia becomes 8th member of EAC after DR Congo which was admitted into the trade bloc last year. The EAC welcomed president Hassan Sheikh to the seat.

Somalia shares borders with one EAC Partner State, namely Kenya, and has strong historical, linguistic, economic and socio-cultural links with all the EAC Partner States.

Somalia has the longest national coastline of over 3,333 kms in Africa, linking Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, which the region will tap into to increase intra-regional trade.

Somalia is now the 8th Member of the EAC Partner States after Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Democratic Republic Congo and United Republic of Tanzania after it was accepted to join EAC by the EAC Heads of State during today’s Summit in Arusha.
