MOGADISHU, Somalia [SMN] – Somalia has celebrated its 63rd anniversary of independence amid a divided country with the north claims to be a sovereign state.
President Hassan Sheikh congratulated the Somali people on the Independence day, urging them to be united to stand for the country facing impacts of the conflict and the droughts.
The date June 26 marks when the northern regions gained independence from the Britain in 1960 after long struggle and united with the south under the Republic of Somalia on 1st July.
Speaker of the Parliament, Aden Madobe, deputy Prime Minister, Senate chairman attended the event at Mogadishu municipality and shared congratulations to the public at large.
Speaking on the occasion, the president said Somalia is at peace with itself and the whole world, adding that the country is on its way to achieving self-sufficiency and development.
