MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday left the capital, Mogadishu for Eritrea’s capital, Asmara, his office said in a short statement.

President Mohamud and his delegation are set to meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara before visiting Somali troops undergoing training in the country for years.

During his state visit, Mohamud is expected to hold bilateral talks on regional issues of common concern with Afwerki, who has maintained close ties with Villa Somalia.

The latest visit marks Mohamud’s fourth official trip to the neighbouring country since he took office in June last year.

On July 9, President Mohamud made his first official visit to Eritrea. He visited thousands of Somali soldiers who had been receiving military training in the country.

Eritrea trains thousands of Somalis who have been undergoing military training for nearly four years. It was also the first time Eritrea publicly acknowledged providing military training to the Somali national army.
