MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has arrived in Djibouti to attend the 41st Extraordinary session of the IGAD assembly, his office said.

The 41st extraordinary session of the IGAD opened today in Djibouti and brings together leaders of the bloc’s member states to discuss the current crisis in the East Africa region.

Mohamud will hold with the leaders of the IGAD on the sideline forum and he will showcase the progress made by his government, including joining the East African Community [EAC].

The Horn of Africa is facing devastating floods resulting from heavy El-Nino rains that caused a humanitarian catastrophe, which will dominate the IGAD conference in Djibouti.

Nearly two million people were displaced in Somalia by the floods and 110 lost their lives in the raging river and rain waters that uprooted thousands of houses and swept away towns.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and IGAD leaders will focus during their meeting on the urgent issues in the region and war on Al-Shabaab will be one of the key agenda.

Last week, the UN Security Council lifted the arms embargo on Somalia to strengthen the SNA’s operations against Al-Shabaab, which is allied with Al-Qaeda and poses a threat to the Horn of Africa.
