DHUSAMAREB, Somalia – The government forces backed by local community fighters on Monday celebrated the victory of an offensive against the al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab.

Galmudug regional state officials congratulated the people for regaining control over new areas in the Galgadud region, mainly located in the vicinity of the capital, Dhusamareb.

The army, with the help of local forces, took over Liban Gelle, about 70 kilometers away from Dhusamareb city during the joint ground assault which dealt a blow to the militants.

The allied forces supported by the US are fighting Al-Shabaab militants and wrested control of larger swathes of key territory, which lies in Galmudug and HirShabelle regional states.

The SNA and the tribal combatants have achieved “successive victories” in their war to liberate the country from Al-Qaeda’s East Africa branch – Al-Shabaab.

Since last year, the army and the local forces killed hundreds of militants as part of their ongoing operation to liberate Somalia from the group, according to the Ministry of Information.

The Somali armed forces and the local forces have taken full control of Harardhere, a coastal city in Mudug, which once served as a main pirate hub and Al-Shabaab bastion.

The government showed it is determined to defeat Al-Shabaab in the battle, as it will receive sophisticated weapons following the complete lift of the UNSC’s arms embargo.
