MOGADISHU, Somalia  –  The prime minister of Somalia chaired preparatory meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday ahead of a global climate change conference in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

COP28 is scheduled from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12 in Dubai with more than 70,000 participants, including government leaders, heads of non-government organizations, businesses, youth delegates and other related parties.

Due to climate crisis, Somalia is facing recurring droughts and floods which impact millions, mainly farmers and livestock herders.

Somalia has been without strong functioning  government since 1990 is largely dependent on foreign aid that makes it weak to deal the climate crisis.

Climate crises threaten Somalia’s socio-economic progress by increasing water and food scarcity, the need for humanitarian assistance, displacement and the degradation of traditional livelihoods.

When President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was sworn into office in May last year, one of his first acts was to formally create a federal Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

He chose Khadija Mohamed al-Makhzoumi, Somalia’s former ambassador to Iraq and Pakistan, to head the department.
