ISTANBUL, Turkey — Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, attended this year’s World Ministers of Agriculture Forum in Istanbul, which focused on “Preventing Food and Water Loss and Protecting Our Future.”

During the forum, Maareeye delivered a speech urging immediate global action to address growing threats to food security and water scarcity. He highlighted the increasing impact of climate change on Somalia, including recurring droughts, declining agricultural output, and limited water resources.

“The reduction of food and water loss is not just an environmental or economic issue—it is a humanitarian imperative,” the minister said. He emphasized Somalia’s commitment to implementing United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/74/209, which calls on countries worldwide to strengthen efforts to reduce food and water losses in pursuit of sustainable development.

Maareeye also called for enhanced international cooperation and support to help vulnerable countries like Somalia mitigate the mounting challenges posed by food and water insecurity.
