MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia said Wednesday that his government stands united against corruption, and those implicated in a judicial commission of inquiry for corruption will be punished.
In an address to the nation on Eid al-Adha, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said corruption remains the major source of some of the major problems the country faces.
“The goal of my government is to build a new and prosperous Somalia based on the crown values of honesty, transparency, accountability and hard work,” added Mohamud.
The head of state said the government is working together with the Wold bank and IMF to revitalize the economy and finalize the debt relief that impedes the country’s progress.
The president’s remarks come barely days after the arrest of several senior officials over alleged corruption. Some fled from Mogadishu after an arrest warrant was issued for them.
Somalia sits at the bottom of the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index by Berlin-based corruption watchdog Transparency International that surveyed 180 countries.
