MOGADISHU — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has appointed Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi as the interim leader of the Southwest state administration following recent political and security tensions in the region, according to an official decree.

The appointment comes after unrest in parts of Southwest state that led to changes in the regional leadership.

Federal government forces intervened during the standoff, resulting in the removal of the previous administration headed by Abdulaziz Hassan Mohamed Lafta-Gareen.

In the decree, Barre said the nomination aims to strengthen stability, governance and preparations for a political process to restructure the Southwest administration.

The interim leader is expected to oversee reconciliation efforts, stabilization and the rebuilding of regional institutions until a formal governing arrangement is established, officials said.
