MOGADISHU, Somalia – The government of Somalia said that an operation in the Galmudug state killed three leaders of Al-Shabaab, the latest blow to the militant group.

In the operation that took place last night in West of El-La Helay, three leaders were killed, namely Olol Ali Guled, Shuuke Ali Dheeg, and Isse Barre, according to the Somali government.

“The government of Somalia is grateful to the local people who helped facilitate the operation,” said the statement by the Ministry of Information issued on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the defense ministry said the SNA repulsed an attack by Al-Shabaab in the middle Shabelle region early on Thursday morning and inflicted losses on the attackers.

“SNA & local forces successfully intercepted intelligence on a planned AlShabaab attack near El-Bad. We swiftly staged a robust defense at Nur Dugle in Middle Shabelle, neutralising the threat. Our troops inflicted heavy casualties on the Khawarij, ensuring the area remains secure,” the ministry said.

Al-Shabaab continues to conduct attacks both within Somalia and in neighboring states, targeting civilians, the Somali state, and the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The security forces in Somalia that are working to counter al-Shabaab—including forces from the United States, ATMIS, and the Somali government—have all undergone transitions in recent years.

In August 2022, Mohamud launched a “total war” against al-Shabaab. In the first phase, Somali forces concentrated on the central regions of Hirshabelle and Galmudug, supporting local clans that were rebelling against al-Shabaab.
