GALKAYO, Somalia – The administration of the Mudug region under Puntland state has confirmed that three civilians died in the heavy rains last night in Galkayo city.

The governor said that the rains caused a large loss of life and property. Hundreds of families have been displaced from their homes, and others are still trapped in their homes.

He added that it is possible that the death toll could likely rise, as efforts are underway to rescue people who are still missing in the areas affected by the floods in the central town.

The local administration appointed a committee that will work to provide relief to the people affected by the rain in Galkayo, which straddles the Galmudug-Puntland border.

On the other hand, the opposition groups accused the Puntland administration led by Said Abdullahi Deni of failing to deal with the damage and loss of life caused by the rains.

In a press release, they said that President Deni is busy with his illegal term extension, instead of working hard on the disaster that happened in the city of Galkayo this week.

The heavy rains that started last month have elevated the water levels on the Juba River, causing flooding in riverine areas of the state, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said in a statement.
