MOGADISHU, Somalia – As SNA plans the second phase of the offensive, the Al-Shabaab group launched an attack last night in the Yaqbari-weyne in the Lower Shabelle region.

The assault started with explosions at the gate of the base that houses Somali government troops and local clan militia fighters and sparked heavy face-to-face fighting in the area.

Somali lawmaker Dahir Amin Jesow said the troops resisted the Al-Shabaab attack and killed many members of the Al-Shabaab who launched the attack last night.

“We defended ourselves and we dealt a heavy blow to Al-Shabaab,” said MP Jesow.

The MP also noted that the local army suffered casualties from the attack, and the injured were taken to the Danab army camp in Ballidoogle area, where they are being treated.

The attack comes on the heels of a similar attack by the group in the early hours of yesterday on a local army and government post in Barujeed area of Galgaduud region, which the group said killed about 60 soldiers.
