US pledges increased support for Somalia

MOGADISHU [SMN] – U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Larry André says the United States is committed to supporting the restoration of a stable, peaceful, and democratic Somalia.

The ambassador said the United States is the largest donor to Somalia in the areas of humanitarian, security, and development.

Ambassador Larry André also stated his commitment to supporting press freedom worldwide. He added that training journalists, and defending the right to free speech in Somalia, are among the top priorities.

The ambassador presented his credentials to Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on February 7th.

The U.S. Senate on December 18 approved Larry Edward André, Jr. as US Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia, replacing Donald Yamamoto, who has been in office since October 2018.
