WFP cuts food rations by 20% for refugees in Dadaab complex

DADAAB, Kenya – WFP said it has informed the refugees in the Dadaab complex about the reduction of the 20% food ratio, starting from July 2023, after facing a lack of funds.

The notice was delivered through the phones of the registered refugees, including hundreds of thousands of Somalis who have been living in Dadaab since they fled the civil war in 1991.

Some of the people said they are living in a difficult situation in terms of food and healthcare in the Dadaab refugee camps which is not good.

WFP is concerned about the new refugees in the Dadaab camps who have been negatively affected by the drought, floods, and conflict in Somalia but do not have food cards.

Years ago, WFP cut the average price of food aid to refugees in the camps by 30%.

The United Nations has said that Russia’s war in Ukraine has caused significant problems for the rest of the world and the biggest one is the loss of grains from Ukrainian ports.

WFP and other humanitarian agencies struggle to assist an influx of refugees reeling from conflict, climate, and high prices in several African countries, mostly Somalia and Eritrea.
