LAS ANOD (SMN) – The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to issue a statement on the latest development of the ongoing conflict in LasAnod, north of Somalia.
The report was expected to be released on Friday but postponed after UK, a member of the UN security council demanded some changes to some phrases, according to the sources.
For the past 20 days, the council has been holding debate over the UNSC’s position on the LasAnod hostilities after receiving documents about the atrocities and the war crimes.
The pending UNSC report will call for the cession of the conflict and withdrawal of the Somaliland forces from the front-lines near LasAnod and urge both sides to negotiate.
Last year, the UN called for an independent and impartial investigation into clashes between SCC and Somaliland, which it said left “at least over 200 dead and 900 injured”.
In the last months, nearly 400,000 people have been displaced by fighting with more than 60,000 — mainly women and children, fleeing to neighbouring Ethiopia, to escape the war.
Somaliland’s forces have retreated to westwards after pulling out of the contested city in January this year and reportedly launching attacks from there, including mortar shelling.
SSC militia battles for an autonomy after 15 years under Somaliland which claims unilateral independence and to have seceded from greater Somalia in May 1991.
