Somali president meets Galmudug elders on fight against Al-Shabaab

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia [SMN] – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is in Dhusamareb last night held a meeting with the elders of Galmudug state.

 

The president asked the elders to play a role in the fight against the Al-Shabaab as SNA and clan fighters in the process of finalizing the first phase of the offensive began in 2022.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said during the meeting at Galmudug state house that the armed forces are working to rid Somalia of Al-Shabaab with the support of the local community.

The government of Somalia mobilized clan militia in central regions last year to help the army in the war that saw the liberation of more than 80 areas from Al-Shabaab.

President Hassan Sheikh arrived in Dhusamareb, where he will temporarily work on the mobilization of the fight against Al-Shabaab, according to Villa Somalia, the presidency.

The second phase of the assault will start in the Galmudug and Hirshabelle and will proceed to Southwest and Jubaland, where Al-Shabaab has fixed bases for more than 15 years.

The neighboring countries – Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia are to send non-ATMIS troops to support Somali forces against al-Shabab in the next phase of military operations this year.

The leaders of the three countries attended a summit hosted by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on February 1 in Mogadishu. In a communique at the time, they said they have agreed to jointly plan and organize a robust operational campaign to “search and destroy” al-Shabab on multiple frontlines.
