MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Banadir regional court is expected to conclude hearings against government officials who have been arrested on corruption charges.
The hearing of the court, which was broadcast live on the media, went on for a while, while the accused persons included the director general of a ministry, central bank employees, and immigration officials.
The suspects were caught in a large-scale anti-corruption operation recently launched by the government led by President Hassan Sheikh who vowed to fight the embezzlement.
Their case has been at the Benadir court for over a month now.
Somalia ranks first in the list of the most corrupt countries in the world every year, due to the chaos and lack of order that has existed in the country for more than 30 years.
The president’s commitment to fighting corruption is a welcome development. He pledged to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption institutions and to ensure that they will have the necessary tools and resources to do their job effectively.
The head of state who won a re-election in May 2022, also promised to hold accountable those who engage in corrupt practices, regardless of their position or influence.
