Somali president briefs cabinet on military gains against Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who spent two months in the city of Dhusomareb, shared with the cabinet the successes the army achieved in the operations against Al-Shabaab.

 

Hassan Sheikh during Thursday’s weekly cabinet meeting, he chaired urged the Ministers to redouble their contribution to the re-liberation efforts and the war on the Al-Qaeda affiliate.

He said that the completion of the Federal Constitution is of special importance to the Somali government, in order to have balanced institutions that work according to the law.

In August 2022, Mohamud launched a “total war” against al-Shabaab. In the first phase, Somali forces concentrated on the central regions of Hirshabelle and Galmudug, supporting local clans that were rebelling against al-Shabaab.

The first stage was the most effective offensive since 2016, expelling al-Shabaab from areas it had controlled for over a decade, and in March 2023 the government launched phase two to attack al-Shabaab in the south.

In his address, Somali Prime Minister Hamse also said at the meeting that the government has established two committees at the ministerial level to play a role in the current battle.

In the end, the meeting approved draft laws and international agreements on the economy, health, information, and the establishment of the Council of Somali Scholars.
