MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has touched down in in Bujumbura on Wednesday on an official visit to Burundi.
The president was accorded a warm welcome by his Burundian counterpart General Évariste Ndayishimiye upon arrival in Bujumbura, according to Villa Somalia statement.
The two leaders held discussions centered on enhancing security cooperation and Somalia’s upcoming bid to join the regional trade bloc – EAC, the East African Community.
“It’s Encouraging steps towards regional integration,” said Somali information minister Daud Aweys in a pot on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Somalia says it is optimistic that its application to join EAC, which has been pending for more than 10 years now, will be accepted.
Somalia submitted its application to join the EAC in February 2012.
The EAC, which is headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania, currently has seven member countries. They are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania.
