MOGADISHU, Somalia — In a landmark move to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment, the Federal Government of Somalia has taken a bold step by announcing a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic bags nationwide.

This significant milestone was initiated with the issuance of a Ministerial Decree today by Ambassador Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, who serves as the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and it is meant to underscore Somalia’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable practices in this decisive action.

Minister Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi stressed the seriousness of the environmental situation that has led to this decree, stating, “Somalia is taking proactive measures to address environmental challenges directly. By banning single-use plastic bags, we are making a dedicated effort to preserve our environment and promote sustainable practices.

Key Decree Provisions:

1. Total Ban on Single-Use Bags:

Commencing on June 30, 2024, the importation, exportation, production, trade, and usage of single-use bags will be strictly prohibited within Somalia.

2. Notification to Businesses:

All entities involved in the importation, manufacturing, retail, and commercial distribution of bags are hereby notified that as of June 30th, 2024, the import and usage of single-use bags will be strictly forbidden.

3. Promotion of Eco-Friendly Alternatives:

The Ministry strongly encourages businesses and traders to explore environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags. The Ministry is dedicated to supporting enterprises engaged in finding sustainable alternatives to single-use bags.

Banning single-use plastic bags in Somalia is important because it promotes the use of eco-friendly alternatives, potentially stimulating local businesses and reducing dependence on non-biodegradable materials, according the Ministry officials. Additionally, it contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment for the Somali population, safeguarding public health and ensuring a better future for generations to come.

This landmark decision not only reflects Somalia’s dedication to environmental protection but also places it among the global leaders in the fight against plastic pollution. “The government’s resolute commitment aims to create a cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens and future generations,” said Minister Khadija.

In addition to this ban on single-use plastic bags, Somalia is actively pursuing a broader climate agenda aimed at addressing various environmental challenges and promoting a sustainable future.
