UN extremely ‘alarmed’ by new wave of displacement in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United Nations says more than 3.45 million people have been internally displaced in Somalia by Jan 2024 due to reasons including drought, floods, and armed conflict.

According to the IOM, the majority (88 percent) of internally displaced people lived in IDP camps, and only 12 percent lived in host communities, in large cities such as the capital Mogadishu.

The displaced areas in Somalia are mostly informal areas that are privately owned, and as a result, land security issues become a major challenge. IDPs are often at risk of being forcibly relocated.

Somalia has experienced countless conflicts, violence, and natural disasters since the outbreak of the civil war in 1991.

This, the IOM said, has led to repeated waves of violence in Somalia and neighboring countries where millions of people have been displaced by conflict and drought.
