MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a powerful speech marking the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, spoke about the ongoing war against al-Shabaab, the importance of federalism and popular elections, and relations with neighboring Ethiopia.
Addressing the war against al-Shabaab, the President expressed his determination to fight the extremist group. He paid tribute to government troops for their sacrifices and urged local al-Shabaab fighters to abandon violence and join the community in stabilizing the country. He emphasized that Somalia is stronger, better equipped, and mentally prepared for this war.
Regarding federalism, President Mohamud clarified his stance, stating that he is not against the system. He highlighted his role in implementing federalism during his previous term, referring to the formation of four federal member states. He encouraged the preparation for popular elections, stating that if voted out, he is prepared to leave office, having done so before in the absence of popular elections.
“Let us give the Somalis the opportunity to decide and elect who they want,” the President said, reiterating his commitment to a peaceful and united Somalia. He emphasized his slogan, “Somalia at peace with itself and the world,” and stressed that there is no justification for compromising the country’s sovereignty or putting foreign interests ahead of Somali interests.
In discussing relations with Ethiopia, President Mohamud was clear that his government would not compromise on Somalia’s sovereignty. He emphasized that Somalia will never give away any part of its territory and that the Somali people will never allow it. The President called for peaceful coexistence and good neighborliness with Ethiopia but was firm in his stance against any violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.
“We are not at war with Ethiopia, Ethiopia is at war with us. We are not annexing part of Ethiopia, we didn’t say we don’t recognize Ethiopia,” the President said. He further noted that Somalia is open to agreements and talks but will not accept any political interference or violation of its territory.
