Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting commenced in the capital city of Mogadishu on May 14, 2024, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presiding over the summit.

The meeting, which is attended by leaders from the Federal Republic of Somalia and representatives from various states, aims to address pressing issues such as the war on Al-Shabaab and the country’s election model.

The NCC meeting comes at a crucial time, as Somalia faces persistent regional disputes and recent delays. The Presidents of the Southwest, Jubbaland, and Galmudug states arrived in Mogadishu to partake in the resumed NCC meeting, signaling a potential step forward in addressing the country’s ongoing challenges.

However, the notable absence of Puntland’s leaders at the summit highlights a deeper rift within Somalia’s federal structure.

Puntland’s non-recognition of the federal government, following recent constitutional amendments, has raised concerns about the inclusivity and effectiveness of the summit.

The amendments, aimed at establishing direct universal suffrage in upcoming national elections, have led to disagreements over adherence to legal frameworks before engaging in further discussions.

Despite these challenges, the NCC meeting aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among Somalia’s leaders. The agenda includes discussions on counter-terrorism strategies to ensure a stable and peaceful Somalia, both internally and externally.

The summit also seeks to address the completion of Somalia’s constitution and the fate of the country’s upcoming election model.

The NCC meeting in Mogadishu represents a critical moment for Somalia as it navigates through complex regional disputes and strives for unity in the face of adversity.

As the summit progresses, the outcomes and decisions made will undoubtedly shape the future of the nation, with the hope of fostering greater stability and prosperity for its people.
