YINCHUAN, China — Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Wednesday paid an official visit to the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base in China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, one of the country’s leading industrial and energy hubs.
The visit was aimed at exploring how Somalia can benefit from Ningxia’s experience in developing diverse energy-producing industries, advancing industrialization, and transitioning to clean energy.
The trip forms part of Somalia’s broader National Transformation Plan, which seeks to modernize key sectors of the country’s economy.
Prime Minister Barre described Ningxia as “a practical example of how integrated policies in industry and energy can drive sustainable development,” adding that lessons from the region could open “valuable avenues for cooperation in energy, industrial growth, and economic development.”
“Somalia is committed to building a modern energy sector, creating new industrial opportunities, and accelerating youth employment — the backbone of our nation’s future — by leveraging advanced technologies and foreign investment,” Barre said.
Ningdong, one of China’s major coal-to-chemicals production bases, plays a critical role in the country’s industrial transformation and energy innovation.
The Somali leader’s visit also reflects Mogadishu’s ongoing efforts to deepen economic cooperation with Beijing, particularly in areas such as energy development, industrial capacity-building, and infrastructure investment.
