MOGADISHU, Oct 22, 2025 – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, on Wednesday officially opened the country’s second National Resilience Conference in the capital, Mogadishu, aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and climate adaptation efforts.
The two-day event, themed “Community Role in Disaster Response and Climate Change Adaptation,” is jointly organized by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and Mogadishu University, with strong support from Plan International.
Senior federal government officials, including cabinet ministers, the head of SoDMA, academic leaders, and hundreds of participants from civil society, international partners, and local communities, are attending the conference.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Jama emphasized the urgent need for inclusive strategies to deal with recurring natural and man-made disasters across Somalia, which continues to face severe climate-related challenges, including droughts, floods, and displacement.
“This conference offers a vital platform to align national efforts and community engagement towards building long-term resilience,” Jama said.
Somalia remains highly vulnerable to climate shocks, with millions affected annually. Organizers say the conference will produce actionable recommendations to enhance the country’s disaster risk management systems and community-led climate response initiatives.
