MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali police officers arrested two government soldiers on Friday who they say were caught in the act of robbing civilians in the capital, Mogadishu.
The arrests took place in the Siinka Dheer area of the Garasbaley district, according to a statement from the Banadir Regional Police Command.
The two men, identified as Mustaf Nisaam Mohamed and Anas Mohamed Mumin, were reportedly wearing official police uniforms at the time.
Authorities said the soldiers were apprehended by officers from the Garasbaley Police Station and will be referred to court for prosecution.
“The Somali Police Force remains committed to holding anyone accountable who violates the law, regardless of their position,” the statement said.
Residents in Mogadishu have long voiced concern over sporadic incidents of crime and corruption involving members of the security forces. The police command urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and report criminal activity to help preserve peace and order in the city.
The arrests come amid a broader government campaign to curb criminal activity in Mogadishu, where security forces have intensified patrols and launched targeted operations in several districts of the Banadir region.
