GAROWE, Somalia – Authorities in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region have issued a stern warning against anyone carrying weapons outside the official security forces, vowing to take firm action against violations.
Puntland Police Commander Gen. Muumin Cabdi Shire said security forces will not tolerate any armed individuals operating beyond government control, stressing that maintaining law and order is now a top priority.
“Anyone who challenges the system and the rule of law will face consequences. We have sacrificed much to build this state, and we will defend it,” Gen. Muumin told reporters.
He noted that political tensions and the activities of armed groups had increased in some areas of Puntland, adding that newly trained units in Carmo are prepared to ensure stability in major towns.
The police chief said the government’s actions are not politically motivated, but are aimed solely at protecting public security.
The remarks come amid growing friction between Puntland and the federal government in Mogadishu. Puntland recently suspended cooperation and halted salary payments to federal troops stationed in the region, deepening the political rift.
