MOGADISHU — Somalia’s police chief deployed security forces to designated posts across the Banadir region to secure local council elections scheduled for Wednesday, officials said.
Police Commissioner Major General Asad Osman Abdullahi, accompanied by Deputy Police Commissioner Major General Osman Abdullahi, ordered officers assigned to election security to take up their positions to protect voters and polling areas in Mogadishu.
Addressing commanders and rank-and-file officers, Asad urged the forces to carry out their duties professionally and in the interest of the country and its people, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust during the vote.
He also instructed officers to provide special assistance to elderly voters, people with disabilities and mothers, to ensure they can cast their ballots safely and without difficulty.
The deployment is part of wider security measures put in place by Somali authorities to ensure the Banadir local council elections proceed peacefully in the capital.
