MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia is preparing for possible flooding and other humanitarian emergencies as officials step up efforts to respond to the potential impact of Super El Niño.
Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, head of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency, met with Brigadier General Abdirisak Mohamud Haji, the acting army commander and Air Force chief.
The meeting focused on preparations for heavy rains, flooding and other emergencies expected to accompany the forecast weather conditions.
Both Abdulle and Haji agreed that Somalia’s armed forces could play a key role in relief and rescue operations by supporting efforts to reach affected communities.
Air Force helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles could be used to deliver humanitarian assistance, collect information and assess conditions on the ground, officials said.
Moalim praised the Air Force and called for closer coordination among government agencies to strengthen preparedness and ensure a swift response to potential disasters.
The meeting come as Somalia remains vulnerable to flooding, which has repeatedly displaced communities, damaged infrastructure and disrupted access to essential services.
