ANKARA — Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned Israel’s recent announcement recognizing the independence of Somaliland, calling the move a violation of international law and a threat to stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement, ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli emphasized that Turkey considers the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia inviolable. He described unilateral actions such as Israel’s recognition as legally null and contrary to the United Nations Charter, stressing that preserving Somalia’s political unity is essential for peace and stability in the region.

Keçeli warned that the development could further destabilize an already fragile region. He said attempts to bypass Somalia’s legitimate government or legitimize separatist movements undermine collective efforts to combat terrorism and promote development. He added that such “opportunistic moves” by external actors would not be accepted by the international community.

Reiterating the deep historical ties between Turkey and Somalia, Keçeli assured Ankara’s continued support for the Somali people and called on all international actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the Horn of Africa.
