MOGADISHU — Somalia’s minister of environment and climate change, Bashiir Mohamed Jama, held talks with Hameed Nuru, the country director of the World Food Programme in Somalia, aimed at strategic cooperation on climate resilience and humanitarian response.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu, focused on key priorities including climate change adaptation, food security, internal displacement and the impact of natural disasters such as droughts and floods.
Both sides discussed ways to accelerate support for vulnerable communities affected by climate shocks and insecurity in parts of the country, underscoring the urgency of coordinated action.
Jama said partnerships with international organizations are critical to strengthening community resilience and mitigating the effects of recurring droughts and other environmental challenges in Somalia.
For his part, Nuru welcomed the Somali government’s efforts to address climate change and support at-risk populations, stressing that closer cooperation between the WFP and the environment ministry would help deliver effective programs to improve food security and prevent displacement.
The two sides agreed to further deepen their strategic partnership and implement joint initiatives focused on saving lives, protecting the environment and building resilience to climate change.
