GENEVA — Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, held talks in Geneva with Britain’s Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders focused on boosting cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights, Somali officials said.
The meeting discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between Somalia and the United Kingdom, particularly in advancing human rights protections and accelerating progress made by Somalia in the field, according to a statement from the Somali ministry.
Sanders praised what she described as progress achieved by Somalia’s Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, highlighting the establishment of Somalia’s Independent National Human Rights Commission and a recent agreement signed in Geneva between the ministry and the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Al-Makhzoumi thanked Britain for its continued support to the Somali government and people, stressing the importance of close cooperation between the two sides on human rights and social development issues.
The meeting comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its international partnerships and improve its human rights record amid ongoing political and security challenges.
