ADDIS ABABA – The African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has praised the continued efforts of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in promoting peace, security and stabilization in the country.
The AU Commission said Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia and Head of AUSSOM, briefed Youssouf on the implementation of the mission’s mandate and recent developments on the ground.
Youssouf commended AUSSOM for its cooperation with the Federal Government of Somalia and troop-contributing countries in protecting civilians, advancing stabilization efforts, strengthening state institutions and supporting the gradual, conditions-based transfer of security responsibilities to Somali security forces.
The AU chief also paid tribute to AUSSOM personnel, praising their courage, professionalism and sacrifices in supporting Somalia’s efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s path toward sustainable peace, security and greater self-reliance.
AUSSOM replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in January 2025, with a mandate focused on supporting Somali security forces, combating armed groups and facilitating the gradual handover of security responsibilities to national institutions.
