HUDUR, Somalia [SMN] – Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed a military convoy carrying Ethiopian forces in besieged Bakool region on Saturday, authorities said.

The attack started with an IED which hit one of the pickup trucks in the convoy, leading to a confrontation between the attackers and the ENDF soldiers, which raged on for an 1 hour.

Details of the casualty figures on both sides were not immediately clear as the area of the attack between Wajid and Rabdhure towns in Hudur is inaccessible with no communication.

Meanwhile, the militants raided military bases in Qoryoley, Barawe, and Janaale in the Lower Shabelle region, where Al-Shabaab has a strong presence and carrying out attacks.

Ethiopians are part of the AU mission in Somalia and they are in border regions to protect their nation from cross-border attacks by Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda’s East Africa branch.

The AU mission now started to withdraw troops from Somalia to meet the Dec 2024 deadline by the UN security council. Somali Govt is preparing to takeover the security task.
