MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Shabelle River has flooded the towns in the Lower Shabelle region and has left a negative impact on the people and major agricultural land.

Pictures show farmland inundated by the waters, sending a wave of shock to the farmers who were preparing to harvest their crops. The country was hit by 4 years of droughts.

The Officials of the Buulo-Mareer and Gol-Weyn towns said that the situation is getting worse by the day as the heavy rains continue to pound the country, causing flash floods.

The Shabelle River has overflowed and started to flood several towns, forcing thousands of people to flee their houses following the negative impact of the waters on their lives.

Other areas of Somalia that have been most affected by floods include Baardheere in Jubaland State and Baidoa in Southwest State, which are said to be the most hit.

The flash and riverine floods affected at least 460,470 people, of whom nearly 219,000 have been displaced from their homes mainly in flood-prone areas, and at least 33 killed.

The rains could also exacerbate outbreaks of waterborne diseases, per the medics.
