JOWHAR, Somalia — AUSSOM troops stationed at Jowhar airport in Somalia’s Sector Five have completed a three-day awareness training focused on the dangers posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and safety at checkpoints.
The training was delivered by the AUSSOM BNDF explosive ordnance management team with support from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).
It focused on helping personnel identify and respond to potential explosive threats at checkpoints, airports and entry points, with particular attention to the safety of female officers working at such locations.
Lieutenant Nsabimana Alexis, a training engineer for Sector Five, said similar sessions would be conducted at other BNDF bases to strengthen force protection and improve the safety of troops and civilians.
He urged participants to apply the skills gained during the training to improve operational safety and effectiveness.
The training forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the capabilities of AUSSOM personnel and support the mission’s security responsibilities in Somalia, where improvised explosive devices remain a major threat to security forces and civilians.
