BAIDOA, Somalia – The Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia Salah Ahmed Jama arrived in Baidoa to assess the situation following flash floods caused by the autumn rains.

Salah, together with the SoDMA chairman and teams from aid agencies visited IDP camps outside the city, where vulnerable people suffered a huge impact due to the torrential rains.

The Deputy Prime Minister held a meeting with the President of the Southwest State Abdiaziz Laftagareen and they discussed ways to help the IDPs who need food and shelter.

Salah’s visit to Baidoa comes amid ongoing efforts to provide aid to the people affected by the floods and to prevent water-borne diseases, including diarrhea and malaria.

The Deputy Prime Minister called on the Somali community, especially businessmen and the Somali diaspora, to come to the help of those affected by the rains in the country.

In Baidoa, the epicenter of a hunger crisis following the last few years of drought, heavy flooding has already caused significant disruption to the city and poses a risk to the safety and well-being of the residents, particularly people currently living in (IDP) camps.

The city, about 250 km southwest of the capital is surrounded by Al-Shabab militants and is at the heart of Somalia’s worst drought in 40 years. Aid groups warn of El-Nino threat.
