MOGADISHU, Somalia — Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has warned of a deepening political crisis in Somalia, as concerns grow over electoral uncertainty and the current government’s remaining term.

In a press statement, Farmaajo said Somalia does not need a situation that could lead to political fragmentation and instability, urging the country’s leadership to uphold the constitution, national unity and state institutions.

He also said the prevailing political uncertainty poses a threat to the country’s future, and appeared to place responsibility on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for any consequences arising from the ongoing political dispute.

Farmaajo’s remarks come as political debate intensifies over Somalia’s electoral model and the direction of the country’s leadership, with parts of the opposition expressing concern over the current political trajectory.

The federal government has not immediately responded to the statement.
