DHOBLEY, Somalia – The Jubaland state security forces conducted an operation in the border city of Dhobley and foiled a mine explosion, according to local authorities.

The roadside bomb was said to have been buried along one of the most important streets in Dholeey district of Gedo region with the aim to target the regional or district officials.

An officer in the town said that they managed to thwart a mine explosion that Al-Shabaab planted on the side of the road before they detonated. This came following a tip-off.

“Jubaland security forces in Dhobley district foiled a landmine that Al-Shabaab was planning to harm the people,” said the army officer, who didn’t want to be named.

Al-Shabaab increased its attacks, including landmines and car bombs after the government forces and the local people overcame the militant group in direct combat in central regions.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh who recently visited Kismayo said the 2nd phase of the military operation will begin in Jubaland and Southwest States after ending the 1st phase.
