GAROWE, Somalia – A political conference between Puntland leaders and opposition figures, including former presidents kicked off in Garowe on Saturday morning.
The sides will discuss the current situation in Somalia, including a planned amendment of the Federal constitution which stoked tension in the country.
The meeting hosted by the Puntland president Said Abdullahi Deni was attended by the former Presidents of Somalia Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, together with members of the two Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
Puntland Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, Parliament Speaker Abdirisaaq Ahmed Saeed, First Deputy Speaker Mohamed Bari, MPs, and other officials are also in attendance.
A brief statement issued by the Puntland presidency said that the conference will discuss the stage the country is going through.
Independent reports say that the most important point of the Garowe Conference is focused on how the Federal Government of Somalia is conducting the process of the amendment of the constitution.
